Forget checking the swell forecast this summer, the waves will be pumping every day at Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa.

The brand-new YourWave surf experience is currently under construction beside the Lap Pool and Conical Thrill, bringing an endless standing wave to the heart of the alpine village. That means you’ll soon be able to surf in the snow, surf in the sun, and surf purely for fun - all in deliciously warm water.

No ocean? No worries.

For first-timers, it’s a chance to master the surf and experience the buzz of riding a wave without paddling through the breakers. For seasoned shredders, it’s an endless playground where the next wave is always rolling in. And let’s talk about the real game-changer: the warmth.

Hanmer Springs’ new surf experience will use geothermally heated water, expected to sit at around 28°C throughout the year. Picture snow on the mountains, crisp alpine air and you, dropping into a warm wave in the middle of it all. Winter surfing has never sounded so toasty, and summer surfing is gonna be hot!

Wiping out should be all part of the fun, too. The YourWave system uses an air-filled wave form with inflatable surroundings - something its creators compare to a bouncy castle - to create a softer and safer place to learn, experiment and inevitably take a few spectacular tumbles.

Already home to thermal pools, hydroslides, the wild Conical Thrill and the brand new Elemental experience with New Zealand’s only snow room, Hanmer Springs is about to add a completely new kind of adventure to the mix. One minute you could be carving up the wave; the next, you could be soaking tired muscles in the thermal pools and replaying your best ride - or craziest wipeout.

Whether you’re a committed surfer, an adventurous grom, a curious first-timer or simply someone who reckons warm-water surfing in the mountains sounds seriously cool, this new attraction deserves a spot on your summer hit list.
